On Friday, February 18, Rebuilding Together partnered with the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service for the fourth consecutive year. This year, the partnership went to Los Angeles. Hundreds of volunteers were recruited to be a part of NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service. Rebuilding Together Greater Los Angeles united NBA players, past and present, with community volunteers and local leaders to rehabilitate three homes and a Senior Community Center in the Vernon Central Neighborhood of Los Angeles. Theresa Lindsay Senior Center
Theresa Lindsay Multipurpose Senior Center seeks to improve the quality of life for the residents of Watts and neighboring communities. It is an activity center and a meal distribution point for hundreds of senior citizens from the South Central Los Angeles.
The Garret Family
Ms. Garret has lived in her home for more than 50 years. Her grandson lives with her and carried within the house. In order for her to leave the house, her grandson had to carry her down the front steps. The work Ms. Garret’s home included extensive structural repair and modification, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work.
The Hernandez Family
The Hernandez family has been residents of the neighborhood for eight years. The modifications improved their pride-of-ownership.
The Barrera Family
Veteran Mr. Barrera and his wife live with three children and three grandchildren in a 104 year old house. Repairs included roof work, de-cluttering,painting and fence replacement on the exterior, bathrooms and kitchen work on the interior.
While the three families and senior center are receiving extensive focus, the entire block received energy efficient kits, curb repair and landscaping.
